Being You 24/7
Being You 24/7 was created as a final project for Color and Surface Design of Textiles. The goal was to use a dying technique and two surface designs techniques in a since textile. I drew inspiration for childhood toys to create pajamas every child would love, while also conveying an important societal message to make them feel empowered. The textile lets young girls know that they can love pink and “girly” toys, without being seen as weak and it doesn’t mean that they can’t also love playing with toys that are typically for boys, such as trucks. Additionally I wanted young boys to know that they can continue to play with their trucks, but that doesn’t mean they can’t love pink and that loving pink does not make them not “manly”. I chose the end use of pajamas because kids should be able to express themselves during all hours of the day. Additionally, night is most often the time when children get to choose their own clothing, which is something they look forward to every night. I wanted the trucks to have fun texture, which is why I choose a block printing technique for the wheels, headlights, and windshields. I wanted this texture to appear almost as if a child had drawn them themselves, to add some childhood joy to the pajamas to draw children to want them. A two screen registration was used for the yellow and blue base on the trucks. The Cotton Jersey was dyed using fiber reactive dye. Created Spring 2018
